Margret Harrison Receives Outpouring of Thanks

Grace Church assembled in force to thank retiring Christian Education Director Margaret Harrison on Sunday, May 22.

The festivities began at the end of the 11 a.m. worship service, where Margaret was presented with a sign crafted by Children’s Church attendees, and received hugs from all the graduating high school seniors who were being recognized that morning. The celebration then moved to the Activity Center, where a very large crowd gathered for a luncheon and program that lasted well into the afternoon.

The Grace Library Committee created an “alphabet book” of the gifts that Margaret shared throughout her two-decade tenure. The A to Z compendium included “F is for Faithful and Focused” and “T is for Teaches with Enthusiasm.”

Many of Margret’s family members were also in attendance including her son Michael, who spoke with great admiration for the example his mother set for him through her work. This sentiment was echoed by many others — even a few who couldn’t be present.

“We had so many good times planning events,”  Judy Rueup shared from Florida. “I especially enjoyed the ‘mini’ vacation bible school sessions with the young children. It was so rewarding to see their faces light up during the times we read stories to them, assisted them with their crafts and other activities.”

Mike Hickok, Grace associate pastor from 1995 to 2001, remembered the way Margaret inspired his daughter with love and generosity.

“She found what hundreds of kids have known throughout your ministry: a leader who accepted everyone and had a passion for sharing the love of Jesus,” he shared in a letter read to the gathering by Administrative Pastor and program emcee Tammy Scott.

Margaret will remain an active member of the Grace Church community, and plans to spend her retirement by enjoying more time with family, especially her grandsons. SPRC has hired long-time member Missy Hoekstra-Hecht to serve as interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator while it looks at long-term options.
