Open Doors Ministry & the Penguin Project

Join us for an afternoon of God’s Word, entertainment, inspiration, and joyful celebration!

What:  Penguin Project’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

When:  Sunday, October 1, at 2:00 pm

Where:  Sycamore High School, Sycamore, Illinois

It has become tradition for Grace’s Open Doors Ministry to attend the annual performance of the Penguin Project.  This is a National program, empowering children and young adults between the ages of 10-22, who have special needs, to explore their abilities and gifts through theatre. As described on the Penguin Project website (, “A group of children…take to the stage to perform a modified version of a well-known Broadway musical. These productions are unique, however, because all the roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other neurological disorders. They are joined on stage by a dedicated group of “peer mentors” – children the same age without disabilities who have volunteered to work side-by-side with them through 4 months of rehearsals and through the final performance.  By providing access to community theater, The Penguin Project demonstrates that the special challenges of a disability should not handicap a child’s ability to participate in life’s experiences.”

This year, we invite the congregation, at-large, to join us in this magical, joyful celebration. I promise that it will be an awesome experience!

In order to attend with the group from Grace, tickets will be on sale THIS SUNDAY ONLY (August 27).  You can order through this link ( or by visiting the ODM table in the activity center between services this week.  Tickets are $12.00 per adult and $6.00 per child and students (through high school).

In addition, ODM will be coordinating a lunch order from Jason’s Deli.  If you’d like to join us for fellowship and food prior to the performance, just indicate your food order when purchasing your tickets. Each boxed lunch is $6.00.  Lunch options will be a ham, turkey or veggie sandwich, served with chips, a pickle, and a chocolate chip cookie.  ODM will provide beverages. We will eat at 12:00 in Fellowship Hall on October 1.

From Grace, we are offering carpool and a caravan to the high school in Sycamore.  When you order tickets, please indicate whether you’d be interesting in participating in a carpool and if so, if you need a ride or if you’d like to be a driver (and how many seats you’d have available).  We will plan to leave from Grace’s lower parking lot at 12:45 p.m.
