Sharing the Bread of Life: A Week of “Faith in Action”

By Rev. Daniel Cochran & Rev. Cindy Marino

Join us this October 14-21 for a week of unique worship and community service opportunities. During this week of “Faith in Action” our theme for the year continues. It’s all about relationship as we celebrate Christ as the one “Bread of Life” that nourishes both body and soul. In our scriptures, sharing bread is both an act of hospitality and a powerful metaphor for our unity in the Body of Christ.  After Jesus miraculously fed 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread, he tells the crowd gathered around him that “I am the bread of life” (John 6:1-35). When we share bread together during Communion, writes the Apostle Paul, we who are many become united in one body—the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:17).

Our week of “Faith in Action” will encourage us to put this tradition into practice, beginning with our annual Children’s Sabbath at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 14. This family-friendly worship service will provide a time for us “to reflect on God’s gift of children, and ways congregations and individuals can renew their commitment to care for, protect and advocate for all children” ( This year, we invite everyone to bring a loaf of your favorite bread (homemade or store-bought) to offer and bless during worship! After worship, join us for one of two afternoon service opportunities: (1) share these fresh loaves with the community around our Faith Build 2018 site in Aurora (1557 Solfisburg)or (2) walk to end global hunger by participating in the Crop Walk that departs from Grace at 1:15 p.m.

Our Faith in Action week continues Monday through Friday as we encourage everyone to plan special acts of kindness or plan to offer extra support to your favorite nonprofit!

On Saturday, October 20, join your Grace family and friends to serve in local mission projects (stay tuned for signups for times and locations!). After a day of serving in the community we’ll gather in the sanctuary of Grace at 5 p.m. to celebrate God and all God provides with worship and Communion. This service will be streamed live online for those who cannot attend, but we encourage all to be present for what is sure to be a unique and celebratory worship experience!

“Faith in Action” week concludes on Sunday, October 21. Due to street closures related to the Naperville Marathon, we will not be holding our usual worship services. But we invite everyone to represent Grace UMC and cheer on the marathon runners! Sign up to help at our Grace Water Station (Clyde Street & 75th) or serve as course guides. Be the hands and feet and encouraging voices of God’s Grace!

We are excited for this eventful week and hope you will join us in coming together to worship in a new way as we serve our neighbors in the Spirit of Christ. Watch for signups and more information! Contact Pastor Cindy ( or Pastor Daniel ( with any questions or for more information.
